Ten tips for a smooth moving day

The school year has ended and that means many things for those of us in Phoenix: warmer weather, summer vacations and – for many people – moving day. Most families move during the summer when their children’s school is closed. Therefore, I thought this time of year would be a good time to offer some moving day tips.

Here are 10 things that should make moving day less stressful and more enjoyable:

  1. Change your address. Updating your address will ensure there isn’t a lapse in your magazine subscriptions or monthly bills. Most of this can be done online and remember to also put in a change of address request with the post office. Update your address with family and friends too. They’ll want to know where to find you!
  2. Start eating the food in your refrigerator and freezer. You don’t want to have to move it so finish off that milk and butter and plan on stocking your refrigerator with groceries from your new local store.
  3. Ask someone to watch your pets during the move (if it’s a local move). It will be much easier if you’re not running after your pets during your first few moments in your new home.
  4. Keep a supply of medicines with you so you don’t have to dig through boxes to find your daily dosage of prescription medications.
  5. Pack special items for your children that they’ll want to have nearby as soon as you arrive at your new home. This will help with their transition from their old familiar surroundings to a new setting.
  6. Likewise, pack the bare necessities. Toilet paper, toiletries, snacks, coffee (and pot), soap, flashlight, screwdriver, can opener, a couple of pans, paper towels, and cleaning supplies are some of the essentials that you may find helpful. Pack a box with these types of items that you can get to and use easily.
  7. If you’re using a professional moving company, have the payment (and tip) ready. This will cut down on time and stress.
  8. Get the bed ready. Designate one drawer of a dresser for sheets and towels so that you won’t have to rummage through boxes for these essentials the first night in your new home.
  9. Protect your memories. If it’s irreplaceable, take it with you in the car (you don’t want regrets later). But if you do decide to pack framed photos or art, place sheets or blankets between them for added protection.
  10. If there is time, take pictures. Your home is where you make most of your memories. Moving day can definitely be a great Kodak moment.

Remember to enjoy this day as much as possible. And congratulations on your new home.
